The 1938 War of the Worlds Broadcast and the Rise of Media Distrust

iROC - Investigating Research on CampusPortrait of: Eric Langstedt

Please be with us October 23rd when Eric Langstedt, Division of Arts and Letters, will present The 1938 War of the Worlds Broadcast and the Rise of MediaDistrust.

On Sunday October 30, 1938, around one million people believed the world was about to end. Why? Because they had tuned into Orson Welles' broadcast of The War of the Worlds. The broadcast has spawned considerable scholarship on audience media literacy and media trustworthiness with Pew research polls suggesting a majority of Americans have a distrust of media sources.

Eric Langstedt, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Communication Arts in the MSMC Division of Arts & Letters. His research interests include advertising, public relations, behavioral influences, sports marketing, and history. He earned his doctoral degree from the University of Connecticut and Masters of Letters from Saint Andrews University.

The 1938 War of the Worlds Broadcast and the Rise of Media Distrust will take place in the DC Café of the Dominican Center. This event has been approved FYE credit as College Connection. All are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!
