Making A Masterpiece: The Saint John's Bible Through an Artist's Lens

Diane von Arx, Saint John's Bible Artist

2019 Samuel D. Affron Memorial Lecture

View all seven volumes of the Saint John's Bible beginning at 6 p.m.

Join Diane von Arx, member of the Artistic Team that created the original Saint John's Bible, for an exploration of the role of the artist in the creation of the magnificent Saint John's Bible, the first hand-lettered and hand-illuminated Bible created in more than 500 years.  Learn how an international group of artists, scribes, and theologians interacted and communicated with one another to complete this monumental achievement.

Diane will walk the audience through her own creative process of producing special treatment illuminations for Wisdom Books, volume 3 of the Saint John’s Bible.

The complete seven volumes of the Bible will be displayed beginning at 6 p.m., where attendees can get an up-close, hands-on view of this sacred and artistic masterpiece.

This program is free and open to the public.

Approved for FYE College Connection; all are welcome.

THE AFFRON LECTURE SERIES:  Jerome S. Affron, a former Mount Saint Mary College trustee, established the Samuel D. Affron Memorial Lecture Series in honor of his father in 1982.  A native of Kingston, Samuel D. Affron was deeply interested in education and served on the board of education in Beacon for many years. He was a man of diverse talents and interests.  He served in the armed forces during World War I and pursued a variety of careers.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:  Diane von Arx is a nationally known calligrapher and graphic artist from Minnesota. As a member of the Artistic Team for the Saint John’s Bible, she created four “special treatment” illuminations for Wisdom Books, volume 4 of the seven-volume set. Diane was also the artistic director, scribe, and illuminator for a special companion volume honoring donors to the Saint John’s Bible project, called The Book of Honor.

Diane has over 45 years of experience in the creative field, working as a graphic designer. She has taught calligraphy and design workshops throughout the U.S. and internationally. Currently the owner of DESIGNS, a lettering art studio, her clients include Target, 3M, University of Minnesota, St. John’s University, Ameriprise Financial, Oklahoma City Museum of Art, and many others.

Diane holds an associate of arts degree from the Jefferson School of Commercial Art in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. For nearly ten years, she worked as a production and lettering artist at Hauck & Associates, a package design studio in Minneapolis, where she created the original lettering for General Mills cereal packages such as Trix ®, Count Chocula ®, and Nature Valley Granola ®.

Diane and her work have been featured in numerous publications. Her art has been exhibited in the United States, Europe, and Japan and is held in public and private collections around the world. She authored three calligraphy workbooks for beginners.

Diane designed the titling for The Word Made Flesh, the 2005 CINE Golden Eagle Award winning film which was produced at St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN to promote the Saint John’s Bible project.

Diane is passionate about the craft of making letters in new and innovative ways, using contemporary materials and techniques while respecting traditional letter forms. Interacting and engaging with viewers of the calligraphic process has convinced her that calligraphy is indeed a “performance art”.  Visit her website:
