Stranded Between Kiowa and Colonial Cultural Worlds: The Captive Story in "News of the World"

12th Annual MSMC Library Week

Patty Matteson, PhD, independent scholar
Heriberto Dixon, PhD, independent scholar, associate professor emeritus, The New School

Dr. Matteson will focus on the novel's thematic roots in American narrative traditions as well as on Jiles’s exploration of the power of language and stories to create community and self. Dr. Dixon will discuss the novel's historical background and context, and talk about his research on Native American practices of kidnapping and adoption of new people into their tribes.

All are welcome, approved for FYE College Life credit.  The talk is free and open to the public.

Dr. Patty Matteson is an independent scholar whose work focuses on 19th century American rhetorics of racism in Native American and white relations, history, literature, and women's writing.  She is also interested in 18th and 19th century American history, gender, and race relations.  Dr. Matteson holds a BA, MA, and PhD from the University of Colorado, Boulder.  Her dissertation was entitled "A Stain on the Blood: Nineteenth-Century Women's Writing and Native Americans." She recently retired as adminstrative coordinator of Mohonk Consultations in New Paltz, NY.

Dr. Heriberto ("Airy") Dixon is Associate Professor Emeritus in Human Resources Management and Development at The New School in New York City.  He also served as adjunct instructor in Business and History at SUNY New Paltz.  Dr. Dixon is a Native American, and a member of the Tutelo and Muskogee tribes.  He earned his bachelors degree from Queens College, his MBA from Columbia University, and his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh.
