The Desmond Center
The Desmond Center for Community Engagement and Wellness is dedicated to bridging the gap between Mount Saint Mary College and the Newburgh community. Its purpose is simple yet significant: to provide health, wellness, educational, and professional services for underserved individuals and families in the local area, including the uninsured. The center offers educational workshops, family counseling services, fitness checks, immunizations, professional development events, and more for the local community.
The Desmond Center is currently operating out of the Mount's School of Business offices but will be located on campus in the multipurpose building known as Guzman Hall. Renovations are scheduled to be completed by next year. Although the center is not yet housed in its official location, programming such as vaccine clinics and family literacy nights are already underway.
Compassionate care at the center is modeled by Mount faculty and students, led by Executive Director of the Desmond Center for Community Engagement and Wellness, Genesis Ramos. The college's School of Business and School of Nursing play a large role in carrying out the center's mission of aiding Newburgh residents who have little or no access to basic health care services. As the center develops, faculty and students in the college's Education, Social Sciences, and various other programs will also lend their skills to the center.
At the Mount, our mission is to provide a service-oriented education to all of our students, no matter their program of study. The Desmond Center for Community Engagement and Wellness is an impactful step toward that goal and strengthening our relationship with the greater Newburgh community.
