Elder Abuse Awareness: Virtual Coalition

The Elder Abuse Awareness: Virtual Coalition is proud to announce the launching of a Virtual Community-Based Outreach regarding the issues of Elder Abuse.  This Virtual Coalition comprises a team of experts who have come together to address the issues of elder abuse that continues to grow and fester, harming the safety and independence of older adults and their families.

During this pandemic as Americans are socially isolating, older adults are at even greater risk of being abused and being taken advantage of. The Elder Abuse Awareness: Virtual Coalition will address the various resources available to empower and educate individuals, families and agency-based personnel regarding the many faces of abuse and scams, as well as provide resources on how to maintain a healthy, active and productive lifestyle.

We will interview experts in the field of aging with a focus on elder abuse. Topics are the Significance of Human Interaction, The Role That the Aging Community Plays, Orange County: Response to Elder Abuse, What Is Elder Abuse, Legal Issues, Caring for a Person with Dementia and Special Needs, Importance of Moving, Staying Connected in Your Spirituality, and You Are Not Alone. These recorded video-casts will be circulated via an email distribution list and made available on our YouTube channel. They can be shared with other outlets and agencies as needed. In addition, we have created ten one-minute Public Service Announcements with Dr. Geri Abbatiello. These announcements will be available for distribution in newsletters, social media, websites, and radio.

The Elder Abuse Awareness: Virtual Coalition team includes: Dr. Larry Force and Dr. Jeffrey Kahana, Director(s) of The Center on Aging and Disability Policy (COAP) at Mount Saint Mary College; AnnMarie Maglione, Director of The Orange County Office of the Aging; Tim Murphy, Supervisor of Orange County Adult Protective Services; Elisa Gwilliam, meditation teacher and founder of Hudson Valley Healing Center; Dr. Geri Abbatiello, Ph.D., GNP, Director of The Center for Life’s Journey; Sandy Altman, Esq., Attorney and Eldercare Advocate; Sharon Murray-Cohen, Elder Abuse Multidisciplinary Team (EMDT) Coordinator; Diana Valentin-Miller, Research Assistant (COAP); Danielle Maglione, Occupational Therapy Assistant and Naveda Simms, Mount Saint Mary College Intern.
