Image-Making Within The Writing Process is an alternative approach to teaching writing and strengthening reading that uses collage made from hand-painted papers to support literacy learning. Facilitated within Artists/Writers Workshop, the Image-Making process uses quality picture books as mentor texts and modeling art and writing lessons to teach the ART of writing. Students create carefully crafted picture books, often tied to the science or social studies curriculum, using their own portfolio of hand-painted papers. The art always precedes the writing.

We will focus on reconstructing family immigration stories and the workshop is ideal for grades 2-12. Whether teachers have personal or ancestral stories to tell, the week will be dedicated to reconstructing their own family immigration story in both pictures and words. No art experience necessary!
