The Mount Saint Mary College Center for Adolescent Research and Development (CARD) is a clearinghouse for research initiatives. These include the psychological, social, cultural, educational, and health-related issues endemic to contemporary adolescents and young adults.
The center also assists in appropriate research-based program development for schools, agencies, and families.
Established in 2009, CARD is located on the campus of Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY.

PULLING ANCHOR, SETTING SAIL: Redefining Identity and Independence
During Early Adulthood
October 15, 2025 | 6 pm | Hudson Hall
A complicated constellation of forces—familial, societal, global, geopolitical, economic, and technological—has dramatically transformed the nature of the transition into adulthood. This program will focus on the challenges facing young adults as they leave adolescence behind and prepare to take on the roles and responsibilities of adulthood in a rapidly-changing world. Taking a cross-cultural approach, it will also address how emerging adults can navigate this crucial personal transformation, and adapt resiliently and resourcefully such that their own lives, as well as the lives of others, are enriched and enhanced.
Dr. Brad Sachs, Ph.d. is a family psychologist with over 40 years of clinical experience. He is the author of numerous books for both clinical and general readership, including Emptying the Nest: Launching Your Young Adult Toward Success and Self-Reliance and Family-Centered Treatment with Struggling Young Adults—The Transition From Adolescence to Autonomy. He also writes the “Emptying the Nest” blog for Psychology Today.

Initiatives of the Center
- Providing services related to measurement development, administration and analysis for school districts, agencies, and other entities (including publication of research related to these instruments)
- Hosting lectures and presentations to promote collaboration among researchers, educators, service providers, and policy makers working with adolescents
- Developing educational outreach programs for other educators as well as the general public/parents – speakers, seminars, programs
- Developing web resources for a ‘one-stop shop’ for all things adolescent for general public, parents, and educators (text recommendations, research updates, other websites and online forms/groups, etc.)
- Developing a collaborative research agenda for center faculty
