Bio

Four decades in the nursing profession has provided opportunity to work in several arenas of healthcare. Working in the acute in-hospital and ambulatory oncology environment in the early years catapulted my passion for the specialty of oncology nursing and the prevention of some cancers. In latter years, I worked in community based and local voluntary organizations.

In my present role in academia, interests and expertise lies within the teaching/learning of community/public health nursing for both pre-licensure and RN to BS nursing students. Forging sustainable academic practice partnerships with local school districts and community based agencies within a service-learning framework has greatly enhanced clinical experiences for students. In addition, collaborative alliances with nurse educators from other schools of nursing and the American Lung Association has added breadth and strength to a concerted effort to address the unusually high asthma burden in targeted high needs communities across New York. This unique team of educators and public health professionals has become a model partnership that blends academia with clinical practice with the ultimate goal of population health improvement.

My doctoral work focused on the efficacy of Open Airways for Schools, an American Lung Association evidenced-based asthma self-management program, in improving asthma self-management skills and self-knowledge in children living in high-needs communities; all within an academic practice partnership framework. Findings from this study demonstrated that Open Airways for Schools® is an effective school-based asthma management program, steeped in historical relevance. Children living in poverty continue to experience the highest emergency department visits and hospitalizations than those with access to quality healthcare and education.

More recent publications continue to highlight my passion for the creation of academic-public health partnerships and their potential for improving population-based outcomes for the most vulnerable.
