Isis Polanco and Shannon Franchi give blood at MSMC

Isis Polanco of Newburgh, N.Y., a Biology major (foreground) and Shannon Franchi of East Northport, N.Y., a Nursing major, give blood at Mount Saint Mary College on February 11.

Mount Saint Mary College held a blood drive in the Fluet Family Auditorium at Hudson Hall on February 11 and 12, which resulted in 127 donations.

Each semester, students, faculty, staff, and members of the local community donate to the Mount’s blood drive. Along with medical professionals from the New York Blood Center, members of the college’s Student Nurses’ Association (SNA, formerly the Nursing Student Union) were among those assisting at the event.

Emily Dee of Garden City South, N.Y., junior class representative of the Mount’s SNA, said that community service is an important part of being a nurse and a Mount student.

“As future nurses, we want to help people,” Dee explained. “What we’re doing with the blood drives every semester could help hundreds of people. It’s something most people don’t think about, but you could help save someone’s life just by donating.”
