This year’s Image Making workshop at Mount Saint Mary College will focus on reconstructing family immigration stories

Mount Saint Mary College’s Collaborative for Equity in Literacy Learning (CELL) will present a workshop for educators on the Image Making literacy method from August 15 to 19, with a final session on August 24.

Sessions run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day in Hudson Hall Auditorium at the Mount’s campus. (The final session, on August 24, will be 4 to 7 p.m.) The workshop fee includes all art materials used during the institute, as well as instructional materials and posters.

Register online at www.msmc.edu/imagemaking. The deadline for registration is Friday, July 29.

Image Making is an alternative approach to teaching writing and strengthening reading. The process uses picture books as mentor texts to help teach the art of writing. Students create carefully crafted picture books, often tied to the science or social studies curriculum, using their own portfolio of hand-painted papers. The art always precedes the writing.

This year’s workshop will focus on reconstructing family immigration stories and is ideal for use with students in grades 2 to 12. No art experience is necessary.

The cost for the workshop is $1,250. Graduate credit is available for an additional fee. Contact Rebecca.Norman@msmc.edu or call 845-569-3431 for more information and registration options.
