  • Define the theoretical framework of posttraumatic growth.Journey to a Book
  • Present thematic content of 4 nursing research studies as exemplars of PTG.
  • Define and discuss methodological parameters of these 4 research studies.
  • Disseminate nursing and other healthcare provider implications of PTG.

Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Scannell-Desch ‘72, Ph.D., RN, OCNS, FAAN is the retired Associate Dean, Rutgers University, School of Nursing, Camden, NJ, the former Director of Graduate and Undergraduate Nursing at Adelphi University’s Hudson Valley Center, and the former Chairperson of Nursing Programs, Mount Saint Mary College, NY, 2004 - 2011.  She holds the tenured rank of Professor at Rutgers University and Mount Saint Mary College. Beth retired from the US Air Force (Nurse Corps) in 1997, after serving on active duty for 25 years.  As an educator and researcher, Beth has over 30 data-based publications in national and international peer-reviewed nursing journals and has been the recipient of nine research grants.  Her program of research has focused on women’s health issues and military nursing. 

Dr. Mary Ellen Doherty ‘72, PhD, RN, CNM, FACNM is a Professor in the Nursing Department at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Connecticut.   She has also taught at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Northeastern University. Most of her career has been spent in clinical practice as a Certified Nurse-Midwife in Massachusetts.  She was the Founder and President of Concord Midwifery Associates with delivery privileges at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts. She is an active nurse researcher conducting many studies on women’s health topics and midwifery care. Dr. Doherty was the 2012 recipient of the Norton Mezvinsky Award for Excellence in Research. She was recently given the distinction of being named a Fellow in the American College of Nurse-Midwives in 2020.
