Transferring colleges is more than just a change of schools; it’s an opportunity to discover new possibilities and take the next step toward your future.
In honor of National Transfer Student Week, we’re highlighting Jorge Jimenez’s journey and how transferring to Mount Saint Mary College helped him grow academically, personally, and professionally.
Why did you choose to transfer to Mount Saint Mary College?
I chose to transfer to Mount Saint Mary College because I was looking for a school where I could continue growing academically while also having opportunities to get involved on campus and prepare for my career in Sports Management. I also wanted to be closer to my family and home. Since the Mount is only about an hour from New York City, it gave me the opportunity to continue my education while still being close enough to my family. I also wanted to be part of a community where I could build relationships with faculty, staff, and other students while continuing to play basketball.
What was the transfer process like?
The transfer process was a big adjustment, but it was also a learning experience for me. There were a lot of things to figure out, including transferring credits, understanding my new academic requirements, and getting familiar with a new campus and environment. The support I received from the Mount made the transition much easier and helped me feel more comfortable as I started my journey here.
What has your experience been like at MSMC so far?
My experience at MSMC has been very positive. I have had the opportunity to get involved in different areas of campus, including being part of the HEOP/CSTEP community, playing on the men’s basketball team, and becoming a Student Ambassador. Being a Student Ambassador has especially helped me grow as a communicator because I have the opportunity to interact with prospective students and families and represent the Mount. I have also built relationships with professors, advisors, coaches, and other students who have supported me throughout my time here.
Transferring to the Mount has helped me become more confident and prepared for my future. Between academics, athletics, being a Student Ambassador, and my involvement on campus, I have developed stronger communication, leadership, and teamwork skills. As someone pursuing a career in Sports Management, these experiences have helped me grow into the type of professional and leader I want to become.
What is different about MSMC than the school you attended prior?
One of the biggest differences for me is the sense of community at MSMC. I feel like there are many people here who genuinely want to see students succeed. Another major difference is that MSMC offers on-campus housing, which has allowed me to be more involved in campus life and be closer to everything happening on campus. The Mount also has two different dining halls that I can choose from, which gives me more options and makes living on campus more convenient. There are also many opportunities to get involved outside of the classroom, whether that is through athletics, student organizations, leadership opportunities, or campus events. I have been able to develop both academically and personally because of those opportunities.
What advice do you have for students thinking of transferring to MSMC?
My advice would be to not be afraid of starting over or trying something new. Transferring can be a big change, but it can also open the door to new opportunities and experiences. I would encourage students to get involved, talk to their professors and advisors, and take advantage of the resources available on campus. Most importantly, give yourself time to adjust and do not be afraid to ask for help.
