New York State Assemblyman Brian Maher traded the legislative chamber for the classroom recently, pulling back the curtain on Albany politics for Mount Saint Mary College students in the Law and Society course.
Taking place in the classroom of Michael L. Fox, J.D., Acting Dean of the School of Business and associate professor of Business Law, the session provided students with an inside look at the legislative and public policy processes that shape everyday life across New York State.
Assemblyman Maher shared firsthand perspectives on the dynamics of the New York State Legislature. Discussion focused on the core factors lawmakers weigh when proposing and drafting new legislation, the structural balance of power between executive and legislative branches, and the varied professional and personal backgrounds that public officials bring to state governance.
The talk was right at home in the Law and Society course, where students explore the mutual relationship between legal frameworks and cultural evolution, examine theories of justice, and analyze the civic necessity of the rule of law.
Maher’s appearance continues a tradition of bringing civic and industry leaders directly to Mount classrooms, bridging academic study with practical public service.
