Local high school students enjoyed Mount Saint Mary College’s inaugural Summer Knights STEAM Camp in July.
The newly launched, weeklong academic program was designed for students entering 10th through 12th grade. The camp offered an immersive exploration of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
Guided by experienced Mount faculty, young scholars spent the week collaborating, experimenting, and bringing creative projects to life across the campus classrooms and specialized laboratories.
By pairing hands-on learning with the mentorship of college professors, the camp gave rising high schoolers a unique head-start on exploring potential academic majors and career pathways in a supportive, collaborative environment.
The lineup included:
- Biology (“Phage Hunting”): Led by Suparna Bhalla, associate professor of Biology, students engaged in authentic scientific discovery, hunting for bacteriophages in the lab.
- Filmmaking (“From Idea to Screen”): Guided by Merle Becker, instructor of Digital Media Production, campers took to the campus to script, shoot, and edit their own short films.
- Business and Finance (“Banking and the Stock Market”): Business professors Michael Fox and Reza Hossain introduced students to the dynamics of financial markets and banking fundamentals.
- Chemistry (“Plastic: Friend or Foe?”): Lynn Maelia, professor of Chemistry, led a forensic exploration into environmental science, polymer chemistry, and sustainability.
- Visual Design (“Logo and Graphics Snowboard Design)”: Under the direction of Chris Neyen, associate professor of Art and Graphic Design, students learned practical graphic design techniques by creating custom digital graphics for snowboards.
