Mount Saint Mary College is excited to announce the launch of its new Advanced Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
This accelerated, five-course program is designed to equip certified teachers and administrators with the specialized knowledge and skills needed to effectively serve the growing population of multilingual learners.
Educators can complete the program in as little as one year, with a start date in the fall semester.
Many families in the Hudson Valley and beyond speak Spanish, Yiddish, Chinese, and other non-English languages at home. Even though these children may come to school proficient in their first language, many of them still need support to thrive in a mainstream setting.
To meet this need, school districts in New York have begun adding specially designed instruction for Multilingual Learner students, and certification in TESOL is required in order to teach in those programs.
The 15-credit advanced certificate program is tailored for educators who already hold a master’s degree. It provides comprehensive training to prepare them for working with English Language Learners (ELLs) in various educational settings, including sheltered-ESL, pullout classes, and inclusion. Upon completion, graduates will be eligible for New York State ESOL teacher certification.
