Mount Saint Mary College will host two sessions of the free Summer Institute for Nursing Exploration this July for high school students interested in pursuing a career in nursing.
The workshop will be held from July 7 – 12, with a second session taking place July 14 – 18. The camp will run daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Mount campus, 330 Powell Ave., Newburgh, N.Y.
Space is limited and registration is required: bit.ly/SINE2025. The application deadline is May 31.
During the camp, students will gain hands-on experience in nursing through interactive workshops and simulations in the Mount’s state-of-the-art facilities. They will learn vital skills such as wound care and vitals monitoring, and engage in high-fidelity simulations. Students will also explore various nursing specialties, including pediatrics, emergency care, and oncology, while hearing from professionals in the nursing career path. They’ll also have the chance to connect with current nursing students for valuable insights into their experiences.
Beyond skill-building, the program focuses on teamwork, stress management, and wellness. Students will participate in team-building exercises, learn stress management techniques, and discover strategies for maintaining wellness throughout their nursing journey.
By the end of the program, participants will have an expanded understanding of the nursing profession, its challenges, and its rewards.
Students will also have the option to gain up to three certifications: Stop the Bleed (recognizing and responding to life-threatening bleeding emergencies), how to use Naloxone (an anti-opioid overdose medicine often known by the brand name “Narcan”), and CPR/First Aid.
The institute is being hosted by the Mount’s Desmond Center for Community Engagement and Wellness. The Desmond Center provides wellness and educational services for underserved individuals and families. The center offers accessible and equitable educational, health, and wellness services for community members and families in the local area. All services are free of cost and open to the community.
