Frank Pellegrino LCSW, CASAC-MC, program director at Resource Recovery Center of Orange County, spoke at the recent Discovery of Recovery symposium at Mount Saint Mary College.

The second Discovery of Recovery symposium at Mount Saint Mary College brought together leaders in the field to discuss community outreach and education on vital addiction issues.

The event was a joint venture between the Mount’s Desmond Center for Community Engagement and Wellness and the Resource Recovery Center of Orange County (RRCOOC).

The first Discovery of Recovery event was held at the Mount last year.

During the course of the two-day event, experts from a variety of organizations discussed substance use disorders and how we can turn the tide of the addiction epidemic.

After introductions by James Simpson, MPH, CHES, Community Outreach Specialist at RROOC, and Genesis Ramos, executive director of the Desmond Center, participants heard from a variety of expert speakers and panelists.

Presentations included:

  • Fernando Montero, Chief Post-Doctoral Research Fellow: the myths and realities of the new era of synthetic drugs, such as Fentanyl and Xylazine.
  • Julianah Ogundimu, an Opioid Use Disorder Systems Specialist: how individuals can navigate the treatment process for non-fatal overdoses in a successful manner.
  • Jillian Nadiak-Bruck from the HEALing Initiative: community engagement in opioid prevention.
  • Shulamit Elson, a specialist in “Voice-Sound” therapy from Medi-Sound: a demonstration of techniques individuals can use to develop a meditative state using biorhythmic sounds.

Sponsors of this event include First Steps to Recovery, Parkview Health Services, Opioid Response Network, Tabasco Health Care, Odyssey House, Bridges, ADAC, New Hope Manor, SAMADHI, AEGIS Sciences Corporation, and Mental Health America of Dutchess County.
