Dozens of Mount Saint Mary College students showcased their research from the Spring 2021 semester at the virtual iROC Student Poster Symposium on Thursday, May 6.
The symposium featured a diverse collection of course-related, honors, and independent research projects rooted in various areas of study. More than 40 students presented their research.
Students from many majors presented their work, including Natural Sciences, Nursing, Business, Social Sciences, Math and IT, Education, and more. Projects included:
- "Annotation of the Insulin Signaling Pathway Gene Sima in Drosophila Species" by Mateo Antonio-Lopez of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., with faculty advisor and iROC coordinator Evan Merkhofer, assistant professor of Biology
- "The Red Carpet: What Does an Accounting Firm Do for the Oscars?" by Edelin Mora Lora of the Bronx, N.Y. and Deirdre Nobel of Rockville Centre, N.Y, with faculty advisor Neirouz Watad, instructor of Accounting
- "COVID-19 El Nuevo Virus," by Julissa Revilla of Carmel, N.Y., with faculty advisor Victor Azuaje, associate professor of Hispanic Studies
- "The Downfall of the Common Core: The Idea or the Implementation," by Sophia Reinhardt of Port Ewen, N.Y., with faculty advisor Monica Merritt, associate professor of Education
Jenifer Lee-Gonyea, associate professor of Criminology, oversaw a dozen student projects that were presented at the symposium, including "Reducing Inmate to Inmate Violence in American Correctional Facilities" by Joseph Stewart of Valley Stream, N.Y.; "Keeping Juveniles Out of the Justice System" by Viana Rosanelli of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and "Race, Riots, and the Influence of the American Justice System" by Matthew Ulrich of New Windsor, N.Y.
The event was sponsored by Mount Saint Mary College's Investigating Research on Campus (iROC) program, which aims to provide a forum for Mount faculty, staff, and students to showcase their research endeavors with both the Mount and the local community.
