Mount Saint Mary College students from the First Year Experience (FYE) program carry bags of donated goods down the steps of the Kaplan Family Mathematics, Science and Technology Center on Tuesday, November 25. The students delivered the items to the campus Care Closet as part of a service project organized by college faculty and staff.
Embracing the spirit of giving just ahead of the Christmas holidays, two sections of First Year Experience (FYE) students at Mount Saint Mary College delivered a sleigh-load of essential donations to the campus Care Closet on Tuesday, November 25.
The service project was organized by Rebecca Berry, assistant professor of Psychology; Brianne Thompson, Director of the Center for Academic and Career Services; and Amy Weit, Senior Director of Residence Life.
The initiative was designed to teach incoming students about community needs while engaging them in a hands-on service project to support their peers.
Students gathered in Aquinas Hall before transporting bags overflowing with food, toiletries, and hygiene products to the Care Closet, located within the Mount’s Campus Ministry offices.
The Care Closet is spearheaded by Fr. Gregoire Fluet, Vice President for Mission and Ministry and Campus Chaplain. The closet is a vital resource at the Mount. It offers daily necessities such as food, toothpaste, and toilet paper to students facing financial or personal difficulties, operating on a compassionate “if you need one, take one” philosophy.
The First Year Experience (FYE) program at the Mount fosters success for incoming students by placing them in Learning Communities where they take linked courses and participate in service learning, helping them build a foundation for their college journey.
