Minor in Health, Physical Education, and Sports Studies

The Health, Physical Education, and Sports Studies minor at Mount Saint Mary College supports the development of the knowledge and skills necessary to promote active lifestyles, health and wellness, and physical activity in both professional and personal contexts. If you are interested in leadership, teamwork, fitness, sport, and wellness, this minor offers opportunities to explore these areas through courses in movement and activity, health and wellness, and sport studies.

As a Health, Physical Education, and Sports Studies minor, you’ll gain foundational skills in human health, wellness education, physical education, sport administration, and sports leadership. Designed to complement a variety of majors, this interdisciplinary minor equips students with practical knowledge and skills to help prepare for careers in coaching, athletic administration, health promotion, recreation management, and physical education.

In this program you can expect to:

  • Engage in movement and activity courses to develop an understanding of these fields of activity, teamwork, leadership, and communication

  • Understand the physiological and psychological basis for health and wellness

  • Gain practical knowledge in sports media, sports facilities management, and sports law

Students interested in becoming physical education teachers may take tailored courses that prepare them for pursuing a New York State (NYS) Physical Education certification pathway after graduation and following the attainment of their initial childhood or adolescence NYS certification.
