The Latino Student Union (LSU) at Mount Saint Mary College hosted a creative celebration of identity and self-worth on Thursday, February 19 with its Amor Propio event.
Students decorated small mirrors with paint, colorful gems, and personalized artwork. The activity served as both a creative outlet and a metaphorical reflection on the concept of amor propio, a Spanish phrase that translates to “self-respect.”
In many Latino cultures, amor propio is regarded as a foundational philosophy of dignity and pride. It emphasizes recognizing one’s inherent value beyond external validation and embracing one’s authentic self and heritage. By decorating the mirrors, students were invited to frame their own reflections with the values and cultural pride that define them.
The Mount’s Latino Student Union hosts events that celebrate diverse traditions and encourage students to explore their unique place within the campus community.
