What to expect as a computer science student

As a Mount Saint Mary College Computer Science major, you’ll learn to analyze problems and develop and test various software systems using languages that instruct the computer on how to execute those processes. Outside of the classroom, you can get involved with the Mount’s honor society for the computing sciences, Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), which sponsors on-campus workshops and behind-the-scenes tours of IT operations at organizations like New York Public Radio. There’s also a focus on giving back, and many students in UPE have held free technology training for the local community.

Curriculum overview

Requirements: The Computer Science program consists of 48 required core credits, plus 12 credits chosen from any CIT, CSC, CYB, or GAM courses at the 2000 level or above.

Timeline: Your studies will begin with foundational courses in your freshman year, which will help guide the direction you want your degree to take. From here, you will add mathematics-related support courses. During your studies, it's strongly encouraged to do an internship to gain real-world industry experience.

Electives: In addition to various electives, you’ll also get to choose courses within our other major areas including Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Game Development.
