Here’s what makes the Mount’s Computer Science major unique:

  • A well-rounded program: In addition to understanding programming concepts and basic computer science theory, students are also grounded in associated disciplines and are given the opportunity to become familiar with various electives available in computer science such as networking, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and database management.

  • Availability: From our professors to our state-of-the-art labs, everything is available to you as a student. Need to complete a project on a lab computer? You have 24/7 swipe access. Have a question about an assignment? Pop by your professors’ office virtually or face-to-face, they’ll be happy to work with you!

  • Training for tomorrow: We might not know what future tech looks like, but we can still help you prepare for it. We’ll focus on giving you the real-world perspective and foundational skills you need to manage not just today’s technology, but tomorrow’s too.

As a Computer Science major, you’ll start with the foundations. This includes some of the same courses that are also core in our other computing science focused majors. From here, you’ll be able to supplement these courses with several mathematics related support courses. You’ll be able to choose the direction you want your studies to go in. In addition to various electives, you’ll also get to choose courses within our other major areas including Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Game Development.

Additionally, you can get involved in the Mount’s honor society for computing sciences, Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), which sponsors on-campus workshops and behind-the-scenes tours of IT operations at organizations like New York Public Radio. There’s also a focus on giving back. Students in UPE have held free technology training at the local community center, and classwork emphasizes that helping to make communication easier and faster is a vital service to the community.  You can get involved in Computer Science research with our faculty and continue your research in the summers through our Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program.

Be Prepared for your future

The Mount’s Center for Academic and Career Services (CACS) is ready to help you prepare for the industry by assisting you in finding an internship and providing career readiness events throughout your time in college and even after graduation. Students are highly recommended to complete an internship as early as their sophomore and junior years, and CACS will help with this process. Mount Computer Science majors are prepared for a variety of career opportunities including computer programmers, software developers, web developers, computer systems analysts, game programmers, software testers, and more.
